Thank you, Amish Acres, for an absolutely wonderful learning opportunity! The "being there" experience of attending live theater has proven to be much more than a "fun day away from school and a great meal." Rather, it has been a highly effective teaching tool. Our field trip to Amish Acres not only allowed my students to gain experience as well-mannered audience members, but more importantly provided them with real, engaged interaction with quality literature and professional actors. Some of my students had never seen live theater before, so the seeds of creativity and dreams of performing themselves one day were certainly planted via our visit to the Round Barn Theater. Being able to talk to the actors added much to the kids' experience - they were thrilled! Of course, every one of my students mentioned the delicious Little Thresher's lunch as a highlight as well. They didn't even mind using table manners!
I have taken groups of my 4th, 5th and 6th grade gifted/talented students to performances of Tom Sawyer and High School Musical. Both features provided wonderful lessons in language, expression, self-discipline, citizenship, interpreting literature, culture, and history. Back at school, the kids were able to extend their experience in writing, researching about related topics, reading, and also in content area connections. I couldn't have come close to wrapping all of that learning into one experience on my own. So, thank you for making the children's theater an affordable, meaningful resource for educators in our region. I would highly recommend it to teachers and students of all ages!
