Joseph Stein Memorial Fund
The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres has established a memorial fund in honor of Joseph Stein to provide free theatre season subscriptions to children. Stein is the author of Plain and Fancy, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary on The Round Barn Theatre Stage. He went on to write Fiddler on the Roof, Zorba, Take Me Along, Enter Laughing and many other Broadway musicals. He passed away October 26, 2010 at the age of 98. His collaborator, Jerry Bock, composer of Fiddler on the Roof, passed away ten days later. The lights of Broadway were dimmed twice in one week for these to giants of musical theatre. The Round Barn Theatre stage was named for Stein in 1997 on opening night of his The Baker's Wife, the first production of the musical since its London premier in 1989 at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End. “I was so touched by your Joseph Stein memorial fund for children. It’s such an important thing to bring children to the theatre at an early age and to help them cultivate a lifelong love of the arts. Joe would have been so proud, as he was of the theatre and the long run of Plain and Fancy.”
Thank you, thank you, thank you and much love, Elisa Stein
In preparation for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Plain and Fancy on the Joseph Stein Stage of The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres, we are saddened by the recent passing of Mr. Stein, its author, our friend and mentor. He was proud of the Joseph Stein Young Actors Studio that for a decade has been bringing theatre for young audiences to the stage. Over 5,000 students each year enjoy musicals produced from classical and contemporary children’s literature. The studio’s other activities include summer day acting camps, scholarships, free Saturday matinee performances of Plain and Fancy and half priced tickets for college students partially underwritten by Lake City Bank.
The Joseph Stein Memorial Fund extends this outreach to the next generation by making season tickets for kids free between the ages of 6 and 12. Students in the family may be added for just $20 each. With the purchase of one or more adult season subscriptions, free season tickets are available to all children in the family. Grandparents can secure up to four free subscriptions for grandchildren. Several hundred children have already secured their free subscriptions for the 2011 season.
Season Subscriptions Nov 1 -Nov 30, Pay $129.95
The 2012 season opens with Church Basement Laides, followed by Plain and Fancy, State Fair, Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Sisters of Swing: The Story of the Andrews Sisters, Driving Miss Daisy, and Miracle on 34th Street!
