Joseph Stein to receive Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre
Joseph Stein will receive the Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre presented annually by The York Theatre Company the evening of November 12, 2007 at The York's home, St. Peters Church on Lexington Avenue, in New York City.
Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, the musical team from Fiddler on The Roof, John Kander, who with the late Fred Ebb wrote Zorba with Stein, Anne Jackson and her husband Eli Wallach, Stephen Schwartz of Wicked fame, and Charles Strouse who wrote the music for Annie and Bye Bye Birdie,are scheduled to appear at the dinner, charity auction, and musical performance. The ensuing musical production featuring music from Stein’s shows will be directed by Stuart Ross, creator of Forever Plaid.
Past recipients include Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Terrence McNally, John Kander & Fred Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince, Arthur Laurents, Jerry Herman, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, who wrote the lyrics to our most recent production of The Will Rogers Follies, Cy Coleman, Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse, Peter Stone, and David Merrick.
The Oscar Hammerstein Award concert features the brightest Broadway stars. In the past, these have included Judy Kaye, Nathan Lane, Audra McDonald, Liza Minelli, Chita Rivera, Tony Roberts, Stephen Sondheim, Liz Callaway, Christine Ebersole, Jim Dale, Faith Prince, Brad Oscar, Karen Ziemba.
